The Blue Stone

How this book was made:
The amethyst, the “blue stone”, is a rock crystal that emerges from dark and ugly volcanic material, and takes a hundred and thirty million years to transform, from inside out, into a beautiful, colorful, crystalline stone, thanks to the action of the elements. It is made of quartz, a mineral present in seventy percent of the continents of the planet, but that only after winning some phases of its “lifecycle” of seventy million years, crystallizes, becoming a preciosity of nature. From these facts, artist Denise Milan, who creates stone sculptures including the famous “blue stone”, created the Opera of the Stones, a spectacle that tells in a figurative manner the story of life on Earth – a planet under mutation, the same way the human beings which inhabit it and interact with it are. The story also stresses the importance of the opposite elements to balance the world in which we live. With this book, the author reveals to the children how life on Earth is actually only one as a whole – and she goes on to teach us how to overcome actively and creatively the adversities and changes imposed by the environment.

Opera of the Stones – First Voices

Opera of the Stones: First Voices is a spectacle inspired in the cosmogony of Earth, in its extraordinary forces of life and the most profound and solid elements of the planet. The history of the Earth and its processes of creation, which unfold into artistic, scientific, metaphysical and poetical senses, is told from the nature of the stones. Based on the study of stones and their mythical reinvention, plastic artist Denise Milan conceived an exuberant staging, divided into four acts: “Telluric voices (birth and development of the Earth)”, “Petrous voices in the magmatic womb (beginning of the cycle of gestation of druses and amethysts)”, “Voices of war in the depths (the collision of mortal, crystalline and stellar beings with immortality)” and “Voices of light and spook (the separation of petrous beings from their shadows)”. Marcos Antônio Guimarães, founder of the Group Uakti and creator of some of the tracks for ballet for Group Corpo, is the author of the music of the spectacle.

Gems of the Earth – Esthetical imagination and hospitality

The seminar Gems of the Earth emerged from the research of plastic artist Denise Milan with the Blue stone, rock found in Brazil and Africa, whose age (750 million years) indicates an era when continents formed a single land. This book compiles the seminar held in 2005, in which scholars in geology, anthropology, philosophy, psychoanalysis, literature, plastic arts and history project and discuss a connection between our origins and the objective possibility of cosmic and ethical peace. Thus, there was an approach to themes such as the intertwining of the pre-solar cosmic time with the human time, finite and contingent; the cultural valorization of stones in the transit between past and present; the figurations of stone from geophysics to anthropology; the connection stones with indigenous peoples and territorial issues; diasporas and experiences of living; relations between cosmopolitism and hospitality; meeting and relating to the other; means of conformation of subjective experiences in the contemporaneous world.
